About Our Organization

International Healthcare Volunteers is a not for-profit organization that provides healthcare to women in under served areas and provides continuing medical education to healthcare professionals in these areas. Patients in these countries are dying from what would be simple medical problems in the United States due to lack of access to medical resources. Established in 2001, International Healthcare Volunteers is composed of doctors and nurses, many of whom work at many local hospitals.

Funded entirely by donations, the organization is headed by James Aikins, Jr., MD, a gynecologic oncologist at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey and an Associate Professor of OB/GYN at UMDNJ / Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Along with direct patient care IHCV is committed in providing support of sustainable programs and continuing medical education. The following are ongoing global health goals of the IHCV organization.

  • To provide sustainable programs for underserved women and their families.
    • Cervical cancer screening initiated in 2008
    • Colon cancer screening initiated in 2007
  • To provide continuing medical education for health professionals
    • Ongoing training and mentorship for Ghanaian midwives for cervical cancer screening
    • Mentorship for physicians in training from Ghana and the US
  • To provide global health elective opportunities for Robert Wood Johnson Medical School  students.

This work will only be possible with your help. To improve women’s health and healthcare in these under served areas, International Healthcare Volunteers needs financial support, as well as donations of medical and surgical equipment, supplies and medications.
